The 8 MB myth
If you search "Discord video limit", half the results still say 8 MB. That was the free limit years ago. It then became 10 MB, and since August 2026 it is 20 MB. Guides quoting 8 MB — and compressor tools with an "8 MB for Discord" preset — are simply out of date.
Why does this matter? Because every megabyte you compress away unnecessarily is quality you lose for nothing. A clip squeezed to 8 MB when 20 MB would have uploaded fine looks dramatically worse. Always compress to your actual cap, not a number from a 2021 tutorial.
What counts toward the limit
- File size, not duration. A 10-second 4K screen recording can exceed 20 MB; a 5-minute 480p clip might fit. Megabytes are all Discord checks.
- The whole attachment. Audio track included — a 128 kbps audio track on a 3-minute video is ~3 MB of your budget.
- 20.1 MB fails. The cap is a hard cutoff, which is why aiming for "about 20 MB" is risky and targeting ~19 MB is smart.
- Server boosts don't raise it. Upload limits come from your plan, not the server's boost level.
